Diabetes is a well-known chronic illness associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
There are two types – Type 1 and Type 2. Most diabetes patients have Type 2.
Ethnicity plays an important role in the prevalence of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is up to 6 times more likely in South Asian people and up to 3 times more likely in Afro-Caribbean people.
Most people with diabetes will develop at least one other illness.
